During this unit you will investigate an engineering problem, explore possible solutions, plan and manage a project, develop an engineering solution, test it and evaluate the outcome.
Before beginning your own project, you need to understand how professional engineering projects are organised and controlled.
How can an engineer take a project from an initial idea or problem to a completed, tested and evaluated engineering solution?

Why This Matters
Engineering projects need control
Engineering projects can involve people, materials, specialist equipment, subcontractors, budgets, deadlines, technical risks and legal requirements.
Without structured project management, even a technically strong idea can fail because tasks are completed in the wrong order, resources are unavailable, costs increase or deadlines are missed.
Imagine a company is developing a new automated manufacturing machine. What could happen if construction starts before requirements, resources, risks, costs and testing have been planned?

What is project management?
Project management is the organised process of defining, planning, controlling and reviewing work so that a required outcome can be achieved within defined constraints.
Engineering project managers must balance technical performance with factors such as time, cost, resources, quality, safety and risk.
It provides the structure that allows engineering work to be completed in a controlled, traceable and professional way.

Although the stages are shown in sequence, real engineering projects often involve feedback between stages. For example, testing during implementation may reveal a problem that requires the design to be revised.

Automated Inspection System Project
An engineering company wants to introduce an automated camera system that detects defective components on a production line.
The company currently relies on manual inspection. Management believes automation could improve consistency and reduce waste.
Identify what should happen during each of the four project life-cycle stages.
