Welcome to Lesson 01 of Component 12: Health & Safety Principles and Coverage.

Engineering environments contain machinery, electricity, hazardous substances, moving equipment and many other potential hazards.

Today we will explore why health and safety legislation exists and how engineers, employers and employees use it to create safer workplaces.

Engineering activities can involve heavy machinery, electricity, chemicals, noise, lifting operations, working at height and many other hazards.

Without proper controls, a small mistake can result in serious injury, damage to equipment, loss of production or harm to members of the public.

Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974

The Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 provides the main legal framework for protecting workers and other people who may be affected by workplace activities.

Key Principle

Health and safety is a shared responsibility.

Employers must provide safe systems, equipment, information and training.

Employees must follow procedures, use equipment correctly and report hazards.

A Busy Engineering Workshop

Imagine you are working in an engineering and manufacturing workshop.

One technician is operating a pedestal drill. Another worker is moving a heavy component. Electrical equipment is being used nearby and different materials and substances are stored around the workshop.

The company must make sure that employees, visitors and other people are protected from unnecessary risk.
